From Toolkits to Profit Engines — Highlights from MIPCOM’s “AI for Revenue” Panel
“AI innovation is moving from creative production straight to the C-suite.” – Catherine Warren, FanTrust
At this year’s MIPCOM Innovation Lab in Cannes, FanTrust President Catherine Warren moderated one of the week’s most buzzed-about sessions: AI for Revenue; Monetizing Content in the Age of AI. Expert panellists shaped the conversation: Johann Choron, Partnerships & GenAI for Film & TV at Google, and Maarten Meijs, CEO of Talpa Studios.
Standing-Room Only: AI Beyond Cost-Cutting
A standing-room-only crowd of entertainment leaders “eager to innovate” confirmed a clear shift; broadcasters, producers, and rightsholders are no longer satisfied with AI for efficiency alone. They want AI for growth.
Google’s Johann Choron captured the moment perfectly:
“The conversation is no longer about whether GenAI will transform the industry, but how it already is.”
He described AI as “the engine of modern media,” powering new approaches to audience engagement, monetization, and operational agility.
Talpa Studios’ Maarten Meijs agreed, sharing that his team applies AI “across the entire creative funnel, from development and production to advertising and distribution” to “add real value to content and creative solutions.”
AI as a Profit Engine
Opening the discussion, Catherine challenged the industry to rethink its relationship with AI:
“Don’t just ask how AI can save you money. Ask how it can make you money.”
She pointed to emerging opportunities such as AI training marketplaces and ShoppableTV, where media companies are turning archives, story worlds, and metadata into new revenue streams.
From Google’s smart licensing frameworks to Talpa’s advertising optimization systems, the panel demonstrated how AI is shifting from a back-office tool to a front-line profit engine.
The Takeaway
AI is no longer confined to writers’ rooms or tech labs. It’s taking its seat at the executive table.
The message from MIPCOM’s AI for Revenue session was clear: the future belongs to media companies that create with AI and monetize through AI, unlocking new line items, partnerships, and business models in the process.
